When the city of Parkston, South Dakota, was looking for expertise with work that was needed on its 300,000-gallon water tower, city officials reached out to the local experts.
“The services we needed were to paint the water tower,” Parkston water superintendent Mike Wolf said. “It was starting to show a little bit of rust on the exterior.”
Water tank expert Chad Edwards from Sioux Falls-based Maguire inspected Parkston’s water tank to determine exactly what needed to be done on the water tower.
“A proper inspection is always the first step,” Edwards said. “Doing an in-depth and professional inspection to evaluate the coating, safety, sanitary, structural, and security conditions allows us to determine what the water tower needs and begin the process of building a plan for the community.”
Once the scope of work was agreed to, one the issues that needed to be solved was how to maintain the city’s water pressure while the water tower was drained to be painted.
“It was very crucial to solve this issue, because when it is 100 degrees, we have a hard time keeping up with water demand,” said Wolf.
Recently, Maguire designed, fabricated, and implemented a fleet of portable pressure tanks to help customers like Parkston take their water towers offline while maintaining their system pressure.
“Many communities need the ability to take their water tank offline for maintenance while maintaining system pressure,” Maguire vice president of sales Jamie Mays said. “Most of the time it has to do with how the system was designed. Using one of our portable pressure tanks to accomplish this is an easy way to allow the community to maintain the water pressure in their system, not waste water, and have peace of mind that their system is operating properly while the water tower is being painted.”
The portable pressure tank stays in place while the tank is being painted. Once the painting is completed, the tower is then filled back up and the portable pressure tank is no longer needed.
“The ease of bringing it in was simple,” Wolf said. “It was phenomenal. There was no wasted water. That was the main reason we decided to use it. It worked out very well.”
Helping communities like Parkston store and protect quality water is Maguire’s mission, and when the project is complete, team members love to hear the comments from the community.
“We’ve gotten great comments from people in town and from other towns as well,” Wolf said. “They were very good people to work with. I would highly recommend working with Maguire again.”
